Although mold grows naturally in our outdoor environment, within our homes there are certain requirements needed for mold to grow and reproduce. A suitable food source, the right temperature, oxygen and of course, water.
Food Source
Mold has plenty of suitable food sources that are easily found within our homes. The most common sources though are cellulose materials such as wood, fabric and wallpaper to name a few.
Temperature
The optimal temperature for mold growth is between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, mold can thrive in temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Oxygen
Although mold needs oxygen to grow and metabolize, they can thrive with little oxygen. This is part of the reason why many fungi tend to grow in areas with poor ventilation.
Water
Arguably the most important part of the equation is water. Mold needs water, moisture or high humidity in order to grow and reproduce. Without water, mold cannot grow – fact.
